ACT Math: The Tricky Topics That Trip Students Up

Students preparing for the ACT discover that certain math topics slow them down or feel extra confusing. At Precision Math Tutoring LLC, we see patterns in the questions students struggle with most. Let’s break them down and talk about how to tackle them.
1. Word Problems That Mix Algebra and Real Life
ACT loves to wrap algebra in a story. A train leaves one city at 60 miles per hour, another leaves 2 hours later… and suddenly it feels overwhelming! The key is to:
Define your variables clearly (let t be time, etc.)
Write equations before worrying about solving them.
Example Problem: A car travels 240 miles at a constant speed. If the trip takes 4 hours, what is the speed of the car? Solution: Distance ÷ Time = Speed → 240 ÷ 4 = 60 mph.
2. Geometry with Special Triangles
Special right triangles (30-60-90 and 45-45-90) show up often. Many students forget the side ratios under test pressure.
30-60-90 triangle sides are in the ratio 1 : √3 : 2.
45-45-90 triangle sides are in the ratio 1 : 1 : √2.
Example Problem: In a 45-45-90 triangle, if one leg is 5, what is the hypotenuse? Solution: Multiply by √2 → 5√2.
3. Functions and Graphs
Students often freeze when they see f(x) = something. Remember, f(x) just means “the output when you plug in x.”
Example Problem: If f(x) = 2x² – 3, what is f(4)? Solution: Plug in 4 → 2(16) – 3 = 32 – 3 = 29.
4. Probability and Counting
Questions involving “how many ways” can be tricky.
Example Problem: How many ways can you arrange the letters A, B, and C? Solution: 3! = 3 × 2 × 1 = 6 ways.
5. Trigonometry Basics
The ACT usually sticks to sine, cosine, and tangent for right triangles. Remember SOH-CAH-TOA.
Example Problem: In a right triangle, the opposite side to angle θ is 3 and the hypotenuse is 5. What is sin(θ)?Solution: sin(θ) = opposite ÷ hypotenuse = 3 ÷ 5 = 0.6.
Final Word for Parents
The ACT is not about memorizing everything — it’s about being strategic and confident with the topics that show up most often. If your teen struggles with word problems, special triangles, or probability, they are not alone. With the right guidance, they can turn weaknesses into strengths.
At Precision Math Tutoring LLC, we specialize in breaking down tough ACT math concepts into simple, step-by-step strategies that stick.
