The Moment Calculus Finally Clicks: Learning the Product Rule

Have you ever stared at a math problem and felt your stomach drop? You know the feeling. Your heart beats a little faster. Your hands feel cold. You think, "I will never get this."

That feeling is normal. Every student who has ever learned calculus has felt it at least once. And one topic that causes this feeling more than almost any other is the product rule.

Here is the good news. The product rule is not scary once someone breaks it down in plain steps. This post will do exactly that.

What Is the Product Rule?

In calculus, you often need to find the derivative of a function. A derivative tells you how fast something is changing.

Sometimes a function is really two functions multiplied together. When that happens, you cannot just find the derivative of each part on its own and multiply them. You need a special rule. That rule is called the product rule.

The Product Rule Formula

If you have two functions, call them u and v, multiplied together, the product rule says:

The derivative of (u times v) equals (the derivative of u times v) plus (u times the derivative of v)

In short form, it looks like this:

(uv)' = u'v + uv'

That is it. Two parts added together.

How to Calculate It, Step by Step

Let us walk through the steps in plain language.

  • Step 1: Look at your problem and find the two parts being multiplied. Call the first part u and the second part v.

  • Step 2: Find the derivative of u. Call this u'.

  • Step 3: Find the derivative of v. Call this v'.

  • Step 4: Multiply u' by v.

  • Step 5: Multiply u by v'.

  • Step 6: Add the results from Step 4 and Step 5 together. That is your final answer.

A Simple Example

Let us try one together.

Problem: Find the derivative of f(x) = x squared times sin(x)

  • u = x squared, so u' = 2x

  • v = sin(x), so v' = cos(x)

Now plug into the formula:

f'(x) = (2x)(sin x) + (x squared)(cos x)

That is the full answer. Two simple pieces added together, just like the steps showed.
