What Do You Learn in Precalculus?

Precalculus is a big step in math. It gets you ready for calculus. It also helps you get better at all the math skills you have learned so far. If you are wondering what your child will learn in this class, here is a simple list.

Functions

Functions are at the heart of precalculus. Students learn how to read, build, and work with different kinds of functions. This includes linear, quadratic, and other types.

Polynomial and Rational Functions

Students dig deeper into polynomials. They learn how to find roots, graph these functions, and understand how they behave.

Exponential and Logarithmic Functions

These functions show up in real life all the time, like population growth or interest rates. Students learn how to graph them and solve problems with them.

Trigonometry

This is a big part of precalculus. Students learn about angles, the unit circle, and the six trig functions like sine and cosine. They also learn how to graph trig functions and solve trig equations.

Vectors

Vectors help describe things that have both size and direction. Students learn how to add, subtract, and use vectors in different problems.

Matrices

Matrices are grids of numbers that help solve systems of equations. Students learn the basics of how to use them.

Sequences and Series

Students learn about patterns of numbers and how to add them up. This includes arithmetic and geometric sequences.

Limits

This is a small taste of calculus. Students learn what a limit is and why it matters before they move on to calculus itself.

Conic Sections

Students learn about circles, ellipses, parabolas, and hyperbolas. They learn how to graph these shapes and write their equations.

Why This Class Matters

Precalculus pulls together many years of math. It builds the skills students need to do well in calculus and beyond.

Need Help With Precalculus?

If your student is struggling with any of these topics, we are here to help. Our tutors use a simple method called the 3Cs. This stands for Clarity, Confidence, and Command. We help students understand the topic, feel sure about their work, and take control of the material.
